| Conservation Concern: 5PIF, WL-Y, FW Population Trend: Substantial Decrease The Dickcissel is a locally fairly common breeder in the CW region and a common breeder in more rural areas to the south and west. Preferred habitat includes grasslands with mixed forbs and abandoned weedy fields. BBS trends indicate sizeably significant annual decreases due to loss of habitat and threats on its wintering grounds in the southern hemisphere. BCN eBird data indicates that this species has declinded very significantly in the Chicago area This species may be severely negatively impacted by grassland restoration efforts and mowing and burning of nonnative weeds, but more research is urgently needed. |
