COOPER'S HAWK

The Cooper's Hawk is an uncommon breeder in the CW Region. This species, once common throughout Illinois, was placed on the Illinois endangered species list in the late 1970's, following declines due to the effects of insecticides such as DDT. The species has since rebounded considerably and was delisted in 1999. Data is too sparse to produce an accurate trend, but shows a considerable increase. This species has also adopted very well to residential areas in NE Illinois - poorly sampled by the BCN Survey. Photo: © Eric Secker
