FIELD SPARROW

The Field Sparrow is a common statewide breeder. Nesting habitat includes mixed grasslands, open to moderate shrublands, and weedy fields. According to a recent Audubon study, this is the 9th fastest declining bird in the nation. The populations in the CW Region - mostly on preserved lands - appear to be relatively stable. Decreases in the Midwest may be partially attributed to increased development and removal of shruby old fields. Parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds is also quite high. Our region, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie, is estimated to hold a large percentage, 16%, of this species population. Photo: © Robert Hambley
