AMERICAN KESTREL

The American Kestrel is a fairly common statewide breeder in open fields and grasslands with trees where it nests in tree cavities. Although some speculate that  kestrels appear to be decreasing in portions of the CW Region due to development and urban sprawl, this species is rarely encountered on BCN Survey point counts and strong conclusions cannot be made from the trends presented here.
