American Woodcock

The American Woodcock is a fairly common breeder in the CW Region. They often breed in open shrublands, moist grassland thickets, and bottomland forests. This frequently nocturnal species is poorly sampled by the BCN Survey. Most of the daytime reports are of accidentally flushed birds during grassland surveys. Monitoring efforts are further complicated by the the fact that this species often breeds early in the season before most point counts begin. Photo: Richard Baetsen / USFWS
