Field Sparrow

The Field Sparrow is a common statewide breeder. Nesting habitat includes mixed grasslands, open to moderate shrublands, and weedy fields. While decreasing in the Midwest, possible due to increased development and removal of shruby old fields, populations in the CW Region - mostly on preserved lands - appear to be stable. Parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds is also quite high. Our region, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie, is estimated to hold a large percentage, 16%, of this species' population. Photo: © Robert Hambley
