Loggerhead Shrike

The Loggerhead Shrike prefers grasslands with shrubs, particularly shrubs with thorns; there is some thought that it may prefer shorter grasslands than are typical in our prairies. The population at and near Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is likely the only one remaining in our region. This species is experiencing nationwide declines. Impacts of pesticides are being investigated among other potential causes of decline. Photo: Dave Menke / USFWS
